Henry's Story

Henry's former owner was a GBGB licensed greyhound trainer and one who appeared to lash out in temper at one of her other dogs at a British greyhound track whilst in full view of the cameras and spectators

"My name is Henry, I am an 8mth old Greyhound boy with 3 legs. I am looking for a forever home after being taken to be put to sleep when my leg was smashed" (extract from a rehoming appeal earlier published by a greyhound rescue).

Henry's former owner was a GBGB licensed greyhound trainer and one who appeared to lash out in temper at one of her other dogs at a British greyhound track whilst in full view of the cameras and spectators.

Henry is now in his forever home with Lorraine, who told us;

“A veterinary nurse who worked at the surgery, had asked for Henry's life to be spared on condition that she would find him a space at a rescue centre. We were just strangers to Henry, but he put his full trust in us to help him recover from his trauma.

Due to the extent of the damage to his leg, he needed a 2nd operation which would shorten the stump even further. He’s 9 years old now, and his disability has not held him back, he continues to love life and lives it to the full.

We have several rescued dogs, all who are lurchers; Henry is amazing with them all and he enjoys being the boss. Henry has been an amazing ambassador for the Greyhounds. In his younger days, he attended track protests and featured on both billboards and placards as far as Australia.

He's not showing any signs of slowing down and does incredibly well on his 3 legs.

I cannot help but wonder if any of his litter mates got this lucky, as I am aware that greyhounds bred for racing can be legally destroyed if they aren't of any use for racing; even with treatable injuries that are much less serious than what Henry suffered.

Henry's mum was around 10 years old when she gave birth to the litter which I think is appalling, and it was not her last one either. Henry has a fantastic life and he is adored by everyone who meets him. I will always be a voice for the greyhounds like Henry, who don’t get the same chance as him to be much loved pets".
