Henry's Story

Greyhound Henry had a leg injury and was to be killed by the racing industry, but fortunately was rescued and rehabilitated by a vet and given a loving home.

           Henry's former owner was a GBGB licensed greyhound trainer and one who appeared to lash out in temper at one of her other dogs at a British greyhound track whilst in full view of the cameras and spectators

           "My name is Henry, I am an 8mth old Greyhound boy with 3 legs. I am looking for a forever home after being taken to be put to sleep when my leg was smashed"

           Henry is now in his forever home with Lorraine, who told us;

           “A veterinary nurse who worked at the surgery, had asked for Henry's life to be spared on condition that she would find him a space at a rescue centre. We were just strangers to Henry, but he put his full trust in us to help him recover from his trauma.

           Due to the extent of the damage to his leg, he needed a 2nd operation which would shorten the stump even further. He’s 9 years old now, and his disability has not held him back, he continues to love life and lives it to the full.

           We have several rescued dogs, all who are lurchers; Henry is amazing with them all and he enjoys being the boss. Henry has been an amazing ambassador for the Greyhounds. In his younger days, he attended track protests and featured on both billboards and placards as far as Australia.

           He's not showing any signs of slowing down and does incredibly well on his 3 legs.

           I cannot help but wonder if any of his litter mates got this lucky, as I am aware that greyhounds bred for racing can be legally destroyed if they aren't of any use for racing; even with treatable injuries that are much less serious than what Henry suffered.

           Henry's mum was around 10 years old when she gave birth to the litter which I think is appalling, and it was not her last one either. Henry has a fantastic life and he is adored by everyone who meets him. I will always be a voice for the greyhounds like Henry, who don’t get the same chance as him to be much loved pets".

Frisby Barney's Story

Frisby Barney was placed in over 71 races and then exported to China. Found to be in an emaciated state, he was rescued and brought back to the UK in 2019.

           Frisby Barney was born in Ireland during June 2010. He went onto have 71 races in the UK, racing at Peterborough, Nottingham, Romford, Kinsley, Yarmouth, and Wimbledon and he became a champion on winning the Peterborough Derby in 2013. He last raced at Peterborough on 4

           Frisby Barney next appeared on an online Chinese advertising database, showing him at Huanghua Kaiyuan Kennel in mainland China. The champion greyhound’s details were picked up along with dozens of other Irish and British raced greyhounds by a UK campaign group, Caged Nationwide. This Data was shared to Candy Cane rescue who raised £22,000 to bring Frisby back to safety in the UK. People were truly devastated to hear what was happening to the greyhounds in China and wanted to see Frisby Barney back home safe and the racing industry held accountable for his suffering.

           Greyhound Data, an online database for greyhounds raced worldwide, showed that Brian Loughnane from Thurles in Ireland, was the last owner of Frisby Barney prior to him being exported to China. Mr Loughnane who also uses the name Mr Locke refused to make any comment.

           Candy Cane rescue brought Frisby Barney back to the UK in 2019, he was found to be in an emaciated state in China and he desperately needed surgery to remove most of his teeth. It didn’t take long for Frisby to find a loving home, where he would settle before having his surgery. Amazingly, he did very well for his age, and recovered with the love and care of his new family.

           If Frisby could speak, he would no doubt tell us about his horrific trip to China and how he suffered at the hands of greedy pedlars and breeders for racing. We are 100% sure he would urge everyone to boycott cruel greyhound racing. Sadly, Frisby will have sired thousands of greyhound puppies throughout his time in China, and the sadness still shows in his wise old face.

           Nobody has been held accountable for what has happened to Frisby Barney or any other exported greyhound.

           Defra claims that Dogs are not a protected species. It remains legal to export Greyhounds to any country whether there are animal protection laws or not. The GBGB say they do not approve of greyhounds being sent to China. However, we are unaware of any sanctions being placed on any owner or trainer whose greyhounds have been found in countries that have no animal welfare laws.
